How to Plan an Ultimate 10-Day, 9-Night Japan Trip for First-Timers
For your first trip to Japan, you could plan Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka with Nara as a day trip.
This aligns with the classic first-time route recommended by Japan’s official tourism organization.
This suggestion first trip to Japan 10days 9 nights offers a practical framing.
My suggested first trip
10 days / 9 nights
| Days | Stay | What to experience |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Tokyo | Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, temples, shopping, food |
| 5–7 | Kyoto | Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Arashiyama |
| 8 | Nara | Deer, Todai-ji, Nara Park |
| 9–10 | Osaka | Dotonbori, Osaka Castle, Japanese food, nightlife |
🗼 Tokyo — 4 nights
Tokyo gives you the huge, modern side of Japan. I’d see Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa/Senso-ji, Meiji Shrine and spend an evening simply wandering and eating.
Don’t try to see the whole city—you’ll enjoy it more by exploring a few neighborhoods properly.
⛩️ Kyoto — 3 nights
This is where you’ll get the traditional Japan experience: temples, gardens, old streets and traditional neighborhoods. Kyoto has hundreds of historic temples and shrines. (Japan Travel)
I’d make time for:
- Fushimi Inari Shrine
- Kiyomizu-dera
- Gion
- Arashiyama
- Nijo Castle
🦌 Nara — 1 day
Nara is an easy addition from Kyoto or Osaka. You can see Nara Park, the famous deer and Todai-ji, home to the enormous Great Buddha. (Japan Travel)
🍜 Osaka — 2 nights
Osaka feels quite different from Kyoto—more casual, energetic and food-focused. Dotonbori, Osaka Castle and the Tenma/Ura-Namba areas are good places to explore. Osaka is also a convenient base for the wider Kansai region. (Japan Travel)
✈️ One important tip
If your flights allow it, fly into Tokyo and fly home from Osaka (Kansai Airport) rather than returning to Tokyo. That gives you a simple east-to-west journey without backtracking. (Japan Travel)
If you tell me how many days you have (5, 7, 10, 14, etc.) and what month you’re going, I can map out a day-by-day Japan itinerary, including hotels/areas to stay, trains, restaurants and the sights I’d prioritize.
